Everything you need to know for the 50th Annual Columbus Bonsai Society Show! See you September 24th-25th, 2022!


The outline for the weekend is included below. As we get more information, I will continue to update this page. Mark your calendars and see you there! For CBS members, you will get information on how to enter trees and volunteer at the event in your email inbox or you can also sign up at the next CBS meeting on Sunday, August 21st.

I. Event Overview

            This year the Columbus Bonsai Society will be hosting our 50th Annual Bonsai Show and we are making a big bash of it! While we have been spreading the news all around Ohio and beyond, we have also been at work behind the scenes to make this event special by securing. For starters, we have two prominent headliner artists - Jim Doyle and Chase Rosade - who will share their knowledge with audiences and critique exhibited trees. We also have more vendors planned for this show than ever before! These vendors include Mark Fields, Rob Hoffman, Ken Huth, Mark Passerello, Dan White, & April Grigsby. Many of our vendors have also generously agreed to participate in leading workshops and demonstrations for our visitors. Please see the detailed schedule below to register ahead and learn more. We also plan to include a raffle, a scavenger hunt/coloring handout for the little ones, a food truck, and more!

II. Where & When!

            We hope to see you and your family at the Dawes Arboretum (7770 Jackson Rd, Newark, OH 43056) on September 24-25th, 2022. The Dawes arboretum is also a large garden estate only a short drive from downtown Columbus. They have a variety of settings for visitors to enjoy including a Japanese garden, topiary garden, and natural Ohio forests. Explore these landscapes and more over miles of walking trails and appreciate their numerous rare species and cultivars of trees. Our CBS show will be located at the visitor center by the main entrance. The exhibited member trees, raffles, vendors, and workshops/demonstrations will all be housed nearby that area. Workshop registration & check-in info:

We strongly recommend planning and reserving your workshop spots early as this will make the check-in process go more smoothly! A summary of workshops and demos can be found on the CBS website here, and workshops for the show can be purchased online here. If you register for a workshop after Thursday 9/22, your name may not make it onto the list of registered participants in time and you will have to bring a receipt or have one accessible in your email/phone on the day of the event for verification. Workshops with open spots can still be purchased online through the CBS store on the day of the event, but again you will have to show your receipt at the check-in station. Lastly, if you absolutely cannot purchase tickets through the online CBS store, members at the check-in station can assist you via their mobile devices if you are comfortable or you could issue a check to CBS on the day of the event.             For your workshop trees, vendor-purchased trees, or for the BYOT on Sunday, we will have a tree drop off and tagging system at the Workshop check-in area. Availability of space may be limited (we will know more on Friday/Saturday after setup is finalized). We hope this will allow you all to walk around and enjoy the show without your trees baking in the car! Some of our show volunteers will also be asked to help man this table. Workshop/demo info:

  1. Saturday 9/24/22
    1. 9:15 AM -10:00 AM - Exhibit tour/critique w/ Jim Doyle & Chase Roade. $10/person; limit 10 participants.
      1. Gain insight about bonsai and bonsai display from two acknowledged masters of the art form. Our special guest artists and judges will give their considered opinions about show entries. Learn what makes an ideal bonsai, the best way to exhibit, and determine what improvements can be made.
    2. 10:15 AM - 11:00 AM - Chase Rosade Juniper Styling, Part 1.
      1. American bonsai master Chase Rosade will present a long-form demo, working on a San Jose juniper. For about an hour he will work in public on initial style considerations, wiring, and pruning. Then he will work more slowly on his own, refining and “finishing”. The public is welcome to observe as Chase will be working at his own pace without an explanatory narrative. The public is invited back later in the afternoon for the second part of his demo.
    3. 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM - Workshop #1 - Make an accent pot. $35/person; limit 10 participants. Appropriate for all experience levels.
      1. Learn the basics of clay, an ancient and familiar material that can be manipulated in surprising ways. No special skills or tools are required; basic techniques will be demonstrated and you’ll have the chance to put them to use, making your very own pot appropriate for small bonsai or other types of plants. Cost includes materials, instruction, and delivery of finished, fired pot to you.
    4. 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM - Workshop #2 - Jim Doyle azalea styling. $245/person. Not appropriate for beginners/new growers.
      1. Jim Doyle will lead a session using Chinsan Azaleas. The stock has approximately 1”+ trunks and is well-branched, these will make good small Bonsai. Cost includes plant material, instruction, and take-home handouts. Participants should bring the usual bonsai tools and wire. No repotting will be done.
    5. 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM Demo/talk –Chase Rosade Juniper styling, part 2
      1. Continued from 10:00 AM session. Chase will discuss the work he has done over the morning and his future plans for the tree. Open to the public.
    6. 3:30PM - 5:30 PM - Workshop #3 - Mark Fields shohin juniper styling. $90/person.
      1. Mark Fields will lead a shohin juniper workshop suitable for all experience levels. Plant stock is very twisty shimpaku juniper, the desirable ‘Itoigawa’ cultivar, these will make very attractive small-size bonsai. Suitable for all experience levels; participants should bring usual bonsai tools and wire. No repotting will be done.
  2. Sunday 9/25/22
    1. 9:15 AM -10:00 AM - Exhibit tour/critique w/ Jim Doyle & Chase Roade. $10/person; limit 10 participants.
      1. Gain insight about bonsai and bonsai display from two acknowledged masters of the art form. Our special guest artists and judges will give their considered opinions about show entries. Learn what makes an ideal bonsai, the best way to exhibit, and determine what improvements can be made.
    2. 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM - Workshop #4 -Absolute beginner ficus session with Jason Parrish. $42/person.
      1. Jason Parrish will lead a beginner’s session, geared toward first-timers and new bonsai hobbyists. Hardy fig trees will be shaped into appealing small bonsai trees. Depending on your aftercare situation at home, repotting may be done.  Two vendors on site will have pottery available for separate purchase.
    3. 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM - Workshop #5 - Rob Hoffman Japanese black pines from raw stock. $75.00/person.
      1. Japanese black pines are a well-regarded, traditional tree for bonsai, called the “king” of bonsai in Japan. Robert Hoffman will lead an in-depth session applying initial shaping techniques to 3-year-old stock. He will also detail a care and development plan for these trees going forward, touching on the key factors for plant health and good design. A complete introduction to the species. Participants should bring the usual bonsai tools and wire. No repotting will be done.
    4. 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Demo/talk -Ken Huth restyles a large ficus. $5/ticket.
      1. Ken Huth will demonstrate drastic pruning and styling on a very large Golden Coin fig ( Ficus "Carpella"). There will be power tools and regular Bonsai tools used as he transforms a huge, bushy, approximately 30-40 year Ficus into something we (hopefully) will recognize as a prize Bonsai in a matter of MINUTES. Make sure to come for the BEGINNING of this Demo! You won't believe your eyes.
    5. 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM Bonus BYOT Workshop Time - Sunday 9/25, 3-5 PM. No cost, space first come first serve.
      1. As we had an extra workshop/demo space at the end of Sunday, Ryan Huston and other senior CBS members will be leading a BYOT session to advise and discuss ideas for our trees. Ryan will also be styling his bog-grown western red cedar yamadori there if you prefer to spectate. Bring a healthy tree from home or join the fun with trees from our vendors.

V. Raffle Details

            Raffle tickets will be available for purchase throughout the weekend for a variety of
items including pots, trees, tools, and workshops. The various raffle items were generously donated by CBS members, vendors, and local businesses. In addition to the vendors donating items that are already listed in Section III, we also received donations from the following local businesses:
            Raffle drawings will take place at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM each day; the exact item list and schedule for drawings will be available at the raffle table at the show. We would prefer items be picked up on the same day or before the end of the show, but if necessary, winners may be able to pick up items at a future CBS meeting. Our raffle manager will contact the winners to arrange pickup!
